About This Item

Boston: Richardson, Lord & Holbrook, Hartford: H. & F. J. Huntington, 1831. First Edition thus. 8vo; 72pp; rebound in ¼ tan leather with black gilt-stamped label on spine and marbled paper over boards; words and music throughout; text age-toned, large dampstain on first 6 pages, first blank with early scribbling in ink, second blank with owner's name in pencil in a childish hand, "Lizzie Jenkins", about very good. Housed in a brown cloth folding box with gilt-stamped black leather label.
This is the first appearance of "Mary Had a Little Lamb" set to music (p. 61). The Juvenile Lyre was edited by Lowell Mason and E. Ives, Jr. (musical educators and hymn-writers). Although the music to "Mary's Lamb" is not the tune familiar to us today, Sarah Josepha Hale's poem is exceedingly familiar. These famous lines first appeared in the periodical The Juvenile Miscellany, Sept.-Oct., 1830; the first edition in a book was in Hale's own collection POEMS FOR OUR CHILDREN, 1830. Johnson, You Know These Lines, pp. 104-106 (citing only the 1832 edition of JUVENILE LYRE). Finley, The Lady of Godey's.
