About This Item

This is a lot of 2 first edition plays by ROBERT FROST; each comes with its original dust jacket:

A MASQUE OF REASON - 1945 1st edition, 1st printing (stated); Henry Holt and Company; New York.
This short play purports to be chapter 43 of the book of Job, which only has 42 chapters. Thus, Frost has written a concluding chapter in the form of the play. In this play, Frost - like John Milton in Paradise Lost - wants to justify God's ways to man. This play is not of high quality because of the use of slang language and his shallow view of divine nature and human nature.

A MASQUE OF MERCY - 1947 1st edition, 1st printing (stated); Henry Holt and Company; New York.
In the last few years Robert Frost has been occupied with a particularly stimulating subject, and one which lends itself well to the dramatic framework of the masque. Broadly, this is a concern with man's attitude towards God. In his earlier A Masque of Reason, the discussion centered around a particular aspect of the relationship between God and man. In A Masque of Mercy the question and problem of the play is that of justice and mercy. Is there not an essential contradiction in man's trust in a just God and in a merciful One? Can God, even, be both at once?
