About This Item
"The Master of Ballantrae" - A Winters's Tale by ROBERT LOUIS STEVENSON. 1889 1st edition, 1st printing (with publisher's catalog at the back dated July, 1889 and no printing designation stated on the title page); Cassell & Company; London. Decorative floral end papers. From a review: "Stevenson's brooding historical romance demonstrates his most abiding theme - the elemental struggle between good and evil - as it unfolds against a hauntingly beautiful Scottish landscape, amid the fierce loyalties and violent enmities that characterized Scottish history. When two brothers attempt to split their loyalties between the warring factions of the 1745 Jacobite rising, one family finds itself tragically divided."
Condition:
Light soiling to the front and back covers, heavier soiling on the spine. Tiny cloth tears at the outer corner tips of the front cover. Small cloth tears at the top and bottom edges of the spine. Tight binding with no loose pages. There is a crack at the front hinge between the end paper and pastedown resulting in the front cover being just a bit shaky. Nice interior - the pages are mostly clean with only a few random, light smudges found and some light foxing to the end papers and to the first few and last few pages. There is name written in old handwriting in pen on the half title page. Overall the book is in Very Good condition.
