Rough cut pages are moderately tanned and thumbed at the edges, creased corners and foxing. Binding has remained firm. Boards have been moderately rub worn. Noticeable shelf wear to corners, spine and edges. Corners are bumped and a little frayed Spine ends are crushed, with noticeable splits and chips. Tanning to spine and edges. Boards are bowed. Book has a forward lean. Water marks to boards and spine.

Octavo (19cm.); publisher's pale blue decorative cloth stamped in dark blue and gilt; vi,[2],523pp.; frontispiece, 13 leaves of plates. Corners slightly bumped, faint stain to spine, contemporary ownership inscription, else Very Good to Near Fine. The Jewish British author's novel based on the life and works of his friend, the British Nova Scotia-based artist George Wylie Hutchinson. Though Hutchinson had illustrated some of Zangwill's earlier novels, this work is illustrated by the Swedish-American Thure de Thulstrup.

It's both cynical and sentimental and has moments of racism and sexism as well as passages that are overwrought and moments that are melodramatic. But all that said: I like what it dares to do. I like that it's clear-headed about things like class and poverty. And most of all I enjoyed that it's a readable yet ambitious novel with both complex characterization and lots of plot.
