About This Item

London, UK: Probsthain & Company. Very Good. 1910. Hardcover. Very Good: three of the corner tips are soft but not bumped; a superficial sort of 'crease' to the cloth of the backstrip; very mild rubbing to the extremities overall; faint foxing to the top edge of the text block; a former owner's blind stamp at the lower outside edge of the front free endpaper and again at the title page; a touch of crimp to the heel of the backstrp; the binding is square and secure; the text is clean. Free of any creased or dog-eared pages in the text. Free of any underlining, hi-lighting or marginalia or marks in the text. A handsome, carefully-used copy, structurally sound and tightly bound, showing mild wear and minor, unobtrusive imperfections. NOT a Remainder, Book-Club, or Ex-Library. Small 8vo. (7.7 x 5.65 x 1.3 inches) Translated for the first time from the Persian into prose by C. E. Wilson, B. A. Language: English. Weight: 15 ounces. Black cloth over boards with gilt titles at backstrip. Rough-cut fore-edge. Hardcover: Lacks DJ, if indeed it ever had one. Arthur Probsthain is an independent bookstore based in London, specialising in antique Asian and African books. The bookstore claims to be one of the oldest Asian bookstore in London after Bernard Quaritch. Jalalu 'd-Din Rumi (1207 – 1273) , perhaps needs no introduction. He was a poet, Hanafi faqih, Islamic scholar, Maturidi theologian and Sufi mystic originally from Greater Khorasan in Greater Iran. Rumi's works were written mostly in Persian, but occasionally he also wrote In Turkish, Arabic and Greek, and employed them in his verse. His Mathnawi , composed in Konya, is considered one of the greatest poems of the Persian language. Rumi's influence has transcended national borders and ethnic divisions: Iranians, Kurds, Tajiks, Turks, Greeks, Pashtuns, other Central Asian Muslims, as well as Muslims of South Asia have greatly appreciated his spiritual legacy for the past seven centuries. His poetry influenced not only Persian literature, but also the literary traditions of the Ottoman Turkish, Chagatai, Kurdish, Urdu, Bengali and Pashto languages. His works are widely read today in their original language across Greater Iran and the Persian-speaking world. His poems have subsequently been translated into many of the world's languages and transposed into various formats. Rumi has been described as the most popular poet" in the world. His work is very popular in Turkey, Azerbaijan and South Asia, and today he has become the best selling poet in the United States. This book represents the first appearance of the Mathnawi in the English language, according to the note at the title page. ; Probsthain's Oriental Series; Small 8vo 7½" - 8" tall; xix, 332 pages .
