London: Cape, 1988. First Edition. Hard Cover. Dust Jacket. (London: Jonathan Cape 1988). First UK Edition, first printing. Publisher's original red cloth with gilt titles to the spine, in dustwrapper. pp. [vi], 7-240; with lively illustrations throughout by Quentin Black, printed in monochrome. A lovely near fine square copy with just the merest hint of foxing (hardly worth mentioning) to the top edge and with a miniscule bump to the bottom left-hand corner of the back board. No inscriptions. Clean pages. Looks to be unread as there is still resistance to the boards when the book is opened. Complete with the near fine (or better) dustwrapper (priced £8.50 net to the inside flap) with absolutely no fading whatsoever to the red spine lettering. No chips, tears, wear or pieces missing to the dustwrapper. A very nice copy indeed. Illustrations by Quentin Blake. MATILDA won the Children's Book Award in 1988 and was the basis of the 1996 film directed by Danny DeVito and the wildly successful stage musical by Tim Minchin and the RSC that began its international life in 2010 and is still going strong.
