London: Jonathan Cape,, 1988. First edition, first impression, of the last major book to be written by Dahl before his death in 1990. Matilda won the Children's Book Award in the year of publication. Dahl's novel formed the basis for both the 1996 film directed by Danny DeVito and the stage musical by Tim Minchin and Dennis Kelly, which premiered at the RSC's Courtyard Theatre in Stratford-upon-Avon in November 2010. A film adaptation of the musical was released in December 2022. Octavo. Original red cloth, spine lettered and with publisher's device in gilt. With dust jacket. Illustrated throughout by Quentin Blake. Light bumping to corners, minor foxing to edges, creases to lower fore-corners of pp. 117-120; minor creasing and nicks to extremities and publisher's laminate, light finger soiling and damp staining to jacket flaps, unclipped: a very good copy.
