Kobunsha, 1886. Paperback. Fair. Fair. 1886 Kobunsha, Tokyo. Date is in Japanese system, Meiji 19 = 1886. Japanese Fairy Tale Series number 10. Later printing; "Copyright Reserved" on outer edge of colophon page. Title in English on front cover, below series title and number. "Told to Children by Mrs. T. H. James." Silk string-bound plain paper book, approximately 4.75 x 7.2 inches. Binding along left edge consists of two sets of four holes stabbed through the paper, with white silk threads forming an X on the back and two knots on the front. Spine is not covered. Color woodblock illustrations on covers and some pages. Covers wrinkled at corners and lightly soiled. Front cover has 14 vertical scrawled pencil marks in the top half, descending from the top edge. There is also a quarter-inch brown stain over the title. Corners rounded. String binding intact. Page corners worn. Pages lightly and uniformly tanned but still supple. NO highlighting or other markings. Unpaginated, 22 folded pages (11 leaves). See our listings for other numbers in this series. Carefully packed, shipped in a box.

Tokyo: T. Hasegawa, Ca. 1898. [Japanese folk literature] ORIGINAL 'CHIRIMEN BON' CREPE PAPER BOOK, A REPRINT THUS. Sextodecimo (15 x 10cm), pp.[19]. Washi leaves with text and woodblock-printed colour illustrations by Kobayashi Eitaku. Pictorial woodblock design and black titles to cover. With fukuro-toji pouch binding and Yamato-toji silk stab-ties. Toning and light spotting to one or two leaves. Small puncture mark and type error to second leaf. Collector's pencilled '75' inscription to penultimate leaf. Illustrations somewhat faded. Some wear to covers, creases to inner-edges. Spine partially eroded. Still in very good condition. Takejir Hasegawa was a notable Japanese publisher during the Meiji and Taish eras.
