About This Item

1644 Matthew of Paris Historia Majora FOLIO CRUSADES Wendover St Alban Abbey

Matthew of Paris was a 13th-century Benedictine monk known for his impressive account of English history – 'Chronica Majora'. Matthew's views of European politics were rare consistent from work to work as he often praised Frederick II and despised the papacy but would write the opposite in other works. In 'Majora,' Matthew analyzes major world events beginning with creation through the year 1253, most of which is based on Roger of Wendover's 'Flores Historiarum.' This work also features an important description and commentary on the lives of monks of St Albans Abbey and the abbey itself.

This 1644 folio edition of the works of Paris was published in Paris and was edited by William Wats, based on Wats' 1641 first edition.
