Bridging the gap between memoir, history, and autobiography, Maus was serialized in Raw from 1980 to 1991, with a collected volume being released in 1986. Maus weaves together two timelines, one in the narrative present, which acts as the framework for the story, and one in the narrative past. The past focuses on the time period from the 1930's, through the Holocaust in 1945. Originally conceptualized around racism in America, Spiegelman used an anecdote from his father as the basis for a short comic, which then spawned a series of interviews, which became the basis for Maus.

Instead of being branded as a comic book in the golden age of Marvel and DC, Maus was labelled a Graphic Novel. This definition made it possible to sell Maus in bookstores instead of comic shops, which contributed to its wide success. With active themes of memory, race representation, and complex racism, Maus has made its mark not only as an important piece of literature, but as a phenomenon, spawning new terms and concepts.

Art Spiegelman (1948 - ) is an American cartoonist, editor and author. Spiegelman developed an interest comics at a young age, beginning his career at the age of 16, and was a key figure in the underground comix movement of the 70's. During this time, he built a reputation as an avant-garde artist.

Synopsis

The Complete Maus is a moving graphic novel that depicts the devastating experiences of the author’s father, Vladek, during the Holocaust. Art Spiegelman, an acclaimed artist, uses animals to represent those present in his retelling. He weaves his relationship with his father into the fabric of the tragic tale, demonstrating the cascading effects of trauma through exploring his father’s experiences surviving the Holocaust and Art’s own experiences growing up with his father. The tragic story, which won the Pulitzer Prize in 1992, has received vast attention for its impactful portrayal of one of the most horrendous events in world history.
