[From introduction on inside of front cover] No other artist has had as great an impact on popular culture in America as did Maxfield Parrish (1870 - 1966). His images appeared everywhere - as illustrations in children's books and in such leading periodicals as Scribner's Magazine, Life, Collier's, St. Nicholas, Ladies' Home Journal, Hearst's Magazine and Harper's Weekly; as advertisements for everything from bicycles to Jell-O, cosmetics to chocolates; as greeting cards; as seventeen successive calendars for General Electric Edison Mazda Lamps as well as other calendars; even as menus and bulletin boards. But it was his art prints that brought Parrish the greatest public acclaim: their popularity was immediate and enormous, creating a previously unparalleled demand. Reproduced in full color in this book are eight of Maxfield Parrish's finest works: The Dinkey-Bird, Air Castles, Daybreak, The Manager Draws the Curtain, Land of Make-Believe, The Lantern Bearers, Puss-in-Boots and a graduation painting from the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. The pop-up format adds a third dimension and a touch of whimsy to Parrish's magnificent paintings and offers a fresh perspective on these timeless classics.
