About This Item

New York: The Divers Press, 1953. First Edition. Softcover. Wrappers worn with crude tape repairs to spine and some staining at the bottom with some pulling of the text block. Still Very Good. Original pictorial wrappers, one of approximately 600 copies. Edited by Robert Creeley. INSCRIBED and SIGNED on the front endpaper: "For Bill & Jeanette Snow/with affection & thanks/Charles Olson/December 1956."

Charles Wilbert "Bill" Snow (1884 - 1977) was an American poet, educator, and politician who served as the 75th Governor of Connecticut. Snow introduced one of his students at Columbia University, Carl Van Doren, to the writings of Herman Melville, who was then mostly unknown. Van Doren was largely responsible for the national rediscovery of Melville, and of course Olson, with his first book CALL ME ISHMAEL, explored his own theories about Melville.
