East Lansing: African Studies Center, Michican State University, 1971. First Edition. Quarto (27.5cm); mimeographed sheets, bound into pictorial wrappers; pp.[i],1-4 (printed on rectos only), 5-68 (printed recto and verso). Spine reinforced with clear tape, wrappers slightly dusty, with a a small splash mark to upper front wrapper, and a short tear to right edge of same (mended with clear tape on verso); contents clean, complete; Very Good. Early issue of this student journal produced by the African Studies Center at Michigan State University, whose aim was "to present information and opinions of and about Africa, and the Diaspora" (p.2). This issue notably contains the full text of Kenyan author Ngugi wa Thiong'o's "The Writer and His Past," a lecture he delivered at an African Studies class at MSU. Additional contributions touch on subjects as diverse as Carter G. Woodson, George Padmore, a new definition of African intellectuals, Pan-African political nationalism, and a discussion on African history from a racist perspective.
