New York, New York: S.S. McClure ; NY, 1900. First Edition. Decorative Cloth. Very Good/Without dust jacket if issued. Single bound volume--six issues with all editorial material but ads and original covers removed. Small quarto, 576 pages + index, gilt titles on green cloth. A very good clean, sturdy, copy overall, with moderate shelf wear and rubbing, hinges cracked but secure and binding solid, paper lightly yellowed with occassional minor foxing and some marginal fingerstaining. McClure's was founded by Samuel Sidney McClure and John Sanborn Phillips in 1893 and quickly rose in popularity using quality fistion and substantial articles on timely topics which established the "Muckraking" standard of the age with original photography and illustration--the demise came slowly after Phillips and key writer Ida Tarbell left to establish the rival American Magazine in 1906. Subjects include Zeppelins, 'defective' children and arctic exploration and Tammany Hall. It was common pratice of the age for magazine publisher's to reprint editorial material in bound volumes before destroying the printer's plates for reuse.
