About This Item

Donnington: Shaun Tyas, 2023. Book. New. Hardcover. 1st Edition. 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" tall. A fine new copy. Here are 19 peer-reviewed essays by leading historians exploring medieval travel in general, not pilgrimage which is more frequently studied. Many medieval journeys were undertaken for reasons other than religion. The essays reveal the roads traversed by travellers, the maps they used, their provision for travel sicknesses and the inns where they stayed. Some of the papers deal with international diplomatic travel, such as the visit of the Emperor Sigismund to England in 1416, exotic journeys round the Mediterranean and along the Silk Road, but much travel was quotidian: to visit relatives, to settle business accounts, to serve on juries or to pursue cases in civil and ecclesiastical courts. Women were frequent travellers, sometimes for pleasure or for family matters, and sometimes for economic reasons. The authors of the essays in order of appearance are Alfred Hiatt, David Harrison, Laura Wright, Carole Rawcliffe, Martha Carlin, Kate Franklin, Kelcey Wilson-Lee, ffiona Peregrinor, Bart Lambert and Joshua Ravenhill, Nicholas Rogers, Robert N. Swanson, Alexandra F. Johnston,. Joanna Mattingley, Joel T. Rosenthal, Nicholas Orme, Julia Boffey, Shayne Aaron Legassie, Martha W. Driver and Mary Lynn Rampolla. Includes index; 59 colour illus, maps as line illus.384 pp plus 64pp col. plates..
