This is a lot of 2 books by Emma Dunham Kelley (Hawkins) from the 1890's. Both books were published by James H. Earle in Boston. A somewhat controversial author due to speculation of her race, Kelley-Hawkins was long considered to be a pioneer of African-American women's literature. Recent genealogical research indicates, however, that Kelly-Hawkins was likely white, or identified herself as white.

Overall the books are in very good condition - here are condition summaries by book. MEDGA: some spotting along the spine, right edge of the back cover, and bottom edge of the front cover; sharp corners; bright gilt on the front cover and spine. Tight binding with no cracks and no loose pages. Clean, lightly tanned pages with no writing, stains or foxing; 1/2" at the outer edge of page 143. COTTAGE CITY: both the front and back covers each have a tiny stain spot; clean spine; sharp corners; bright gilt on the front cover and spine. Tight binding with no cracks and no loose pages. The pages are mostly clean and white with some occasional light stain spots on random pages; some light soiling at the top edge of the title page; there a few small stain spots at the top edge of pages 98-101; a thin 1.5" strip of the top layer of paper of page 263 has peeled and is adhered to opposing page 262. Name/address written in pencil on front end paper...no other writing found.
