William Thornton Bate was a 19th-century British naval officer who fought in the British wars with China, famously dying in the Battle of Canton. Author John Baillie wrote a biography of the life and career of Bate – one of the best biographies on Bate. 'A Memoir of Capt Bate' also surveys Chinese and Hong Kong history and customs as well as political tensions leading to the Second Opium War.

Likely Otho Glynn Bolitho (1844-1911), Lieutenant Colonel of the 3rd Dragoon Guards and a member of the old Cornish family from Madron which found its fortune in trading and banking; by 1885, they were known as the "merchant princes" of Cornwall. He was also the brother of Thomas Robins Bolitho JP DL (1840–1925), an English banker and landowner, who served as High Sheriff of Cornwall in 1890. Motto: RE DEU

Andrew David (1925-2021) was a Lieutenant Commander in the Royal Navy. He is particularly remembered for his contributions to naval history, with recognition from The Hakluyt Society (a text publication society, founded in 1846 and based in London, England, which publishes scholarly editions of primary records of historic voyages, travels and other geographical material) in 2006 with the first award of the President's Medal.
