DJ/Good; intact w/nips, chips, closed tears to edges. French translation of "Lame Deer, Seeker of Visions", 1972. 332 pgs w/illustrations. 16 chapters. Biography & memoir. American history through the life Sioux American-Indian holy man, John Fire Lame Deer (1903 - 1976) of the Lakotas. Text based on extensive interviews with friend, European born journalist, editor, illustrator and author Richard Erdoes Erdos (1912 - 2008) who described himself as "equal parts Austrian, Hungarian and German, as well as equal parts Catholic, Protestant and Jew". Colaboration to two men of divergent heritage. Lame Deer was a Mineconju-Lakota Sioux born on the Rosebud Indian Reservation. At 14 he relugated to a Bureau fo Indian Affairs' boarding school after which he joined a rodeo circuit. drank, gambled, womanized, and even engaged in car theft before joining American Indian Movement events, including sit-ins at the Black Hills, to become a medicine man and community learder; while Richard Erdoes (1912 - 2008), immigrating to America, becomes a prominent writer on the Indian Civil Rights Movement. A meeting of gifted minds bringing forth Lakota history, traditon philosophy, legends, religious beliefs, rituals and ceremonies, the practice of medicine, and modern historical desecration of the Indian population, injustices, and even environmental destruction heaped upon a people and a land.
