Bound in red cloth with gilt title to the spine. The binding is tight and square. There is soiling to the boards and minor shelf wear to the edges. Inside, the pages are clean and bright with just a touch of toning and the occasional finger rub. There is a date neatly written to the ffep, and the pastedown has been partially lost, but otherwise the book remains in tidy condition.

In all, this is a smart example of this title by Siegfried Sassoon. Published in 1930, it gives a fictionalised account of the author's own life during and following World War I. It quickly became a classic, becoming even more successful than his previous novel, Memoirs of a Fox-Hunting Man. It was described as "A book of deep beauty and abiding significance. A book which will, I hope and believe, be read by millions" (Harold Nelson). In 1981, Paul Hogarth created illustrations for this book, which became the subject of an exhibition at the Victoria and Albert Museum in 2014. This is a smart example of this book, and it would sit well on any shelf.
