About This Item
Baltimore: Joseph Cushing,. 1814., 1814. First American edition from the second Paris edition. With Notes by the Translator. Two volumes (complete). 8vos. xxiii, 415 pp.; 434 pp. Rebound in modern cloth with new endpapers. Larrey (1768-1842) studied under Desault at L Hotel Dieu. He became the greatest military surgeon in history. He was present at all of Napoleon s great battles and was one of the few who stood by him on his abdication and waited for him to return in 1815. He was one of the first to amputate at the hip joint, the first to describe the therapeutic effect of maggots on wounds, gave the first description of trench foot, invented the flying ambulance , used advanced first-aid posts on the battlefield, and devised several new operations. With Percy, the other great Napoleonic military surgeon, Larrey emphasized bringing medical aid to the wounded in the midst of battle, battlefield surgery, and fast ambulance transport of wounded to rear treatment centers. Binding is fine and contents quite bright with scattered light foxing. Very good.. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Very Good.
