A bright and clean copy of this lovely edition, beautifully printed on fine quality hand made paper and in a decorative leather binding. ----- This edition was published by arrangement with Macmillan and Company using Carroll's revised text of 1896. Twin red labels, ruled and lettered in gilt. Boards with double gilt ruled and blind decorative borders. Original endpapers with small green bookbinders ticket in top corner of front paste-downs. Edges and corners a bit bumped and rubbed and half of one raised band missing but still a very attractive pair of early bindings on this very bright copy.

The binding is let down by paper spine labels which could be replaced. Volume 1 has two bookplates including that of a college but there are no markings in the books. New end-papers. Some foxing especially to frontispiece of each volume but overall a reasonably clean set. Seven portrait plates and four folding plates all as called for. Eight engraved portraits, and six plates ( one a facsimile of Pepy's handwriting and short-hand cypher, one double page (folding map,) This diary, written in a very small hand in six volumes, was included among his books at Magdalene. Pepys wrote it in Shelton's system of tachygraphy published in 1641, which he embellished with foreign languages and by varieties of his own invention. "The Autobiography of Benjamin Franklin is the traditional name for the unfinished record of his own life written by Benjamin Franklin from 1771 to 1790; however, Franklin himself appears to have called the work his Memoirs. Although it had a tortuous publication history after Franklin's death, this work has become one of the most famous and influential examples of an autobiography ever written. Franklin's account of his life is divided into four parts, reflecting the different periods at which he wrote them.

Her husband Joseph Morrell Dodge had a long and distinguished career and tried to help reform Europe but later wound up as financial advisor to Douglas MacArthur in the economic revitalization of Japan. This edition is in very good condition internally. Photos of Ikebana arrangements by the famous Japan Ikebana master. A gift given to Julia Jeffers Dodge and placed in her library. 38 single sided (double page but other side blank) on high quality Japan paper with photo examples of Ikebana, black and white. A rare publication.
