Black coloured cloth covered boards with gilt coloured titles to the back strip. Plaintext dustwrapper with black and white coloured titles to the front panel and back strip. "The fifth volume of Mr Maisky's memoirs demonstrates once again what a considerable asset the soviet union had in their Ambassador in London, especially in the war years. It was fortunate for this country, too, that the strained course of Anglo-Russian relations, after the signing of the German-Russian pact in 1939 should have been smoothed by a man who knew and wished Britain well. By one of the ironies of history, however, the warnings sent to Moscow by the British government through Mr Maisky on the imminent attack by the Nazis on Russia were ignored by the Kremlin." -- front fold over blurb. The front end of the text block has been stained by a liquid, although there is absolutely no damage to any of the page faces .the dust jacket is battered, with a 2.0 in stare at the top left-hand corner of the rear panel, a 0.5 in tear midway along the spine edge of the front panel, and has lost colour across the top and right-hand side of the front panel from exposure to light.
