Sioux City: Ferris Bros., 1897. First Edition. (4), 58pp.. including 3pp. of facsimiles. Title, repeated on, within mourning border. Original printed wrappers, small spot on front wrapper. Otherwise very good. Charles Floyd, 1782-1804, was the only member of the Lewis and Clark Expedition, in which he served as quartermaster, to die on the expedition, of a ruptured appendix. He is also said to be the first American soldier to die in service west of the Mississippi. He was buried, and reburied in 1857 and reburied in 1895, the year of the founding of the association on a bluff overlooking the Missouri River, currently within the limits of Sioux, where an obelisk monument was completed in 1901. Floyd's journal was discovered in 1894 and published in the AAS Proceedings. Elliott Coues 1842-1899, editor of the Lewis and Clark journals, prepared this report as part of the effort to complete the monument. Besides the business of the association there is much here on Floyd, his role in the expedition, his journal and his death and burial. Not in Howes or Eberstadt.
