San Francisco: Privately Printed, 1948. First Edition. Cloth. Near Fine/Custom Clear Mylar. (xiv) 81 pages. This is a presentation copy, SIGNED/INSCRIBED by author David Warren Ryder in ink on the half-title to Norman B. Livermore, "This book is presented to Norman B. Livermore, with the esteem, admiration and all good wishes of David Warren Ryder / San Francisco, April 18, 1949." Illustrated from vintage photographs and decorations by Dan Adair. Printed by Taylor & Taylor of San Francisco. Preface by Otis R. Johnson. Red Cloth. Gilt spine titling. 6 3/4" x 9 3/4".
Written primarily for members of the Union Lumber Company organization, this book contains a well-researched and well-written history of logging and mill operation on the Mendocino Coast, including a good deal about the vessels which transported lumber along the Coast. Norman B. Livermore was a well-respected environmentalist, member of a pioneer California family, influential Sierra Club member, and Governor Ronald Reagan's Secretary of Resources for the whole of Reagan's governorship. He was influential in convincing Reagan to oppose the Trans-Sierra Highway (which would have crossed the John Muir Trail), work with Nevada Governor Laxalt to preserve the Tahoe Basin, and endorse the Redwoods National Park. A nice association copy. A Near Fine or better copy (slight edgewear) now in a custom, clear mylar 4-mil jacket. ALWAYS FREE SHIPPING of our books in boxes via media mail to any United States address.
