During that same time, more than 500 new colleges and universities were created, so that fully one fifth of all the country's institutions of higher learning in 1970 had come into being during the previous decade. Many of these new schools- as well as many long-established ones- appeared to be providing little if anything in the way of formal support services for students who undergo any form of emotional or behavioral crisis.
