Oakland, CA: Fontes Printing Co., c.1930's. Staplebound. Orange cardboard wraps, illustrated in black and white. Very good. 24 x 16 cm. Six page menu featuring Cocktails, American Dishes, Chinese Dishes, and an architectural plan. The New Shanghai Cafe was an offshoot of the herbalist guru Fong Yan's empire of clubs, restaurants, and Chinese herb shop. Fong Wan, originally from Guangdong Province in China, successfully branded himself, putting his name and picture in advertisements at a time when Asians were largely kept on the margins of society. The rear page of the menu contains an outline of the corporation's business plan to expand the restaurant with an architectural rendering on the following page. Light toning to edges, previously folded, otherwise clean.
