About This Item

[Lesbian] [Autobiography] DE ACOSTA, Mercedes. Here Lies the Heart: A Tale of my Life. New York: Reynal and Co. 1960. First edition, first printing. Cloth yellow boards with black cloth spine. Decorated dust jacket with mylar wrapper. 8vo., (xii), 372pp. Born to an affluent Cuban-American family in 1892, Mercedes de Acosta was a novelist, playwright, and poet but was more renowned for her controversial lesbian affairs with early 20th century Hollywood starlets. Being diagnosed with a brain tumor in 1960, Acosta decided to write her most revealing and seminal memoir Here Lies the Heart: A Tale of my Life, though it read to the public as more of an exposé. Acosta was met with harsh criticism for her cavalier attitude towards homosexuality, and even harsher backlash from some of the celebrities she claimed to have these "lesbian affairs" with, such as Greta Garbo, and Eva Le Gallienne to name only a few. Marlene Dietrich, being a rebellious and gender bending woman herself, was one of the only big name friends of Acosta's that continued to stand by Mercedes after the book was published. This forthright autobiography presents a highly personal perspective of homosexuality and women's liberation from traditional norms during the burgeoning of the 20th century Social Revolution. Clean and tight, dust jacket has some minor wrinkles at bottom of rear panel. Overall very good condition.
