About This Item

Washington: James B. Steedman, Printer, 1858. Very Good+ condition. See photos. A bright, square, reasonably tight copy. Top of spine slightly frayed. Fore-edge of the textblock is lightly spotted. Both inner and outer hinges are perfectly sound. Bound in the original brown cloth, with decorative blind stamping to the spine and boards, both front and rear. The spine is gilt-stamped "Message and Documents 1858-9, Part 2." Below the spine is blind-stamped "House Document." NOT a library discard. NO owner's name or bookplate. Text is clean with almost NO foxing. NO underlining. NO margin notes. This is the House of Representatives version, 35th Congress, 2d session, Ex. Doc. No. 2. This entire volume, all 670 pages, consists of the report of Secretary of War, John B. Floyd. Included are over 200 pages on affairs in the Utah Territory and conduct and results of the Mormon War -- the 1857-58 military expedition sent into Utah to remove Brigham Young as governor of the territory and to force the population to submit to the authority of the United States government. Included are several Brigham Young letters and documents, including one that confirms the events of a conference held in Great Salt Lake City, on the 11th and 12th of June, 1858. At page 113 is the proclamation by Alfred Cummings, governor of Utah Territory, accepting President Buchanan's pardon for "all treasons and seditions" committed by the inhabitants of Utah. There are also sizable quantities of material about other parts of the West -- e.g. expeditions and explorations in Nebraska, the Dakotas, Texas, New Mexico, etc. Pages 426-434 report on a military expedition from Ft. Leavenworth to Minnesota that had orders to require Indians to cease hostilities and to notify all British subjects who were in the habit of entering the territory of the United Stated for hunting and trapping that "such depredations" would no longer be permitted. Pages 456-491 constitute a report, with 20 illustrations, on the establishment in America of a "dromedary corps" of camels for military use. Other reports detail expeditions against hostile "Northern Indians" near Fort Walla-Walla, Washington Territory; the "Navajo Expedition" in New Mexico; a peace treaty with the Nez Percés Tribe; etc. Flake 9251 [in A MORMON BIBLIOGRAPHY]: "Includes material on the Utah expedition and affairs in Utah with pertinent correspondence, orders, etc.". First Edition. Hardcover. Very Good+ condition. 8vo. (ii), 670pp.
