LONDON: Printed for Patrick Martin., 1815 First edition; [4],188 printed pages. 15 fine hand coloured aquatint plates after Rowlandson (slightly toned margins). Engraved previous owner's bookplate on front free endpaper. Marbled endpapers. Minor toning to and offsetting from the plates, occasional spots. 14 x 22 cm. Contemporary full tree calf, gilt spine with red morocco label & gilt lettering, with alternating compartments within double gilt filets of radiating fluted petals within pointille lozenges, and 24 stars inside vertically scrolling guilloche borders (worn at the spine ends, lower joint slightly cracked but boards are well attached). Upper board has a slightly dark circle in the centre (corners slightly bumped and worn). Good copy, complete. Humorous narrative of the experiences of an officer in the Peninsular War, illustrated by the pre-eminent cartoonist Thomas Rowlandson. Provenance:- Michel Wittock, 1936-2020, a former industrialist who became an avid bibliophile (his armorial bookplate was drawn by W.Goffin and engraved by J.Boulanger).
