A presentation copy, SIGNED/INSCRIBED by Gene Fowler in ink on the title page: "To my long-time friend Lucius Beebe, the arbiter. With the best / Gene / 1954". First Edition. Endpapers illustrated from photographs and drawings. Illustrated dustjacket. Octavo. Cloth-backed boards. From the jacket, "...some misadventures, both comic and melancholy, of John Barrymore, W. C. Fields, and John Decker while helping the Author attempt to write the biography of Sadakichi Hartmann, poet, self-proclaimed genius, artful rogue and moocher sans pariel." A wonderfully written memoir of the Bundy Drive Boys, this classic has developed a cultlike following. Author Gene Fowler was a longtime friend of Lucius Beebe, who was quoted in Herb Caen's column as saying, "We like Gene Fowler's aphorism, 'Money is something to be thrown off the back of trains.'". A nice association copy. #36 of the 100 Best Books of Hollywood. A Near Fine copy (slightly rubbed) in a Very Good jacket (Edgewear; mostly at head of spine ) now in a clear mylar protective sleeve.
