Foreword by F.E. Abernethy, Texas Folklore Society. THE SOUTHERN BELLE WHO BECAME THE FIRST WOMAN GOVERNOR OF TEXAS. 9.5"x6.5", 347 pages. Satisfaction Guaranteed. While growing up in Bell County as a privileged Southern Belle, Miriam Amanda Ferguson never dreamed she would became the first woman governor of Texas. However, seven years after her husband James Ferguson was impeached from the governor's office, he announced in his newspaper the Ferguson Forum that a Ferguson would be in the 1925 gubernatorial race. To everyone's surprise, Jim Ferguson placed his wife, Miriam Amanda Ferguson on the ballot. Due in part to the ratification of the nineteenth amendment, she won bot the primary and the general election by a large majority. Although critics identified the Fergusons with demagoguery and corruption, supporters lauded them as friends of the oppressed. Often referring to Miriam Ferguson as Mrs. Jim Ferguson, historians have described her as merely a figure head or a "rubber stamp" governor. With access to all of the Ferguson family's private papers, along with contemporary publications and documents, the authors are able to draw a more objective picture of Miriam than has been previously portrayed. Miriam's individuality is evident in the details presented by the authors in describing her two terms as governor. . Signed by Author. First Edition. Hardcover. Very Good/Very Good. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall.
