A readable reference copy of an important scarce text, and priced accordingly. Disbound. Complete in Two Volumes. Not widely held insitutionally. This work isa translation of the Mishkat al-Masabih and a commentary of the text. Included is an index of the Persons, Tribes and Places mentioned in the text, to the rear of Volume II. This isthe firstEnglish translation of Mishkat al-Masabih. Matthews' translation hassome shortcomings, including mis-translated or missing Ahadith, but is noted as a remarkable work for its time in Traditions of Islam, by Alfred Guillaume. From the library at Newton Hall, the 18th century country house and estate in Northumberland. Newton Hall became the home of author Samuel Edward Widdrington, formerly Cook. Condition: The report for Volume I is as follows: The binding is generally firm. Leaves from the front through to page i of the Author's Preface are detached. The boards are detached but present. There is significant loss to the front board. Internally the pageshave significant loss from singeing, prominent from the front through to page 70. The lossonly affects the text from thetitle page to dedication, including the list of subscribers. The singeing marks and marginal losscarry on throughout the volume, but the text remains complete andlegible. There is marginal loss to the rear of the volume to page 585, with loss to the footnotes only from page 659-664. Overall the condition is poor. The report for Volume II is as follows: The binding is generally tight and firm. The boards are detached, but present. The title page isdetached. Leaves from the front to page 28 are detached as a single textblock. There is wear to the extremities, including bumping and rubbing. Internally the pages are bright with the occasional spot or mark. Overall the condition is fair with a very good interior..
