About This Item
New York: Atheneum, 1979. First Edition . Hardcover. Fine/Very Good +. This is a stated first edition. The interior of the book is crisp and clean, showing no marks or wear. The blue covers are fresh, with just a touch of wear at the top and bottom of the spine. The dust jacket is price-clipped, but is otherwise in excellent condition, with very minor wear. Synopsis: Elphie is devastated when her mother left home for good, taking her brother Edward along, and when her father sank into a depression and had to be hospitalized, Elphie went to live with her Granny Gil in Scotland. There she felt loved and petted, but when her grandmother died unexpectedly, Elphie had to go first to a foster home, and then to a boarding school. At the boarding school she discovered an unused turret room, where she could go to think and be alone, but the longer she stayed in the room, the more aware she became of another presence. Elphie felt the ghost's presence (and unhappiness) increasingly strongly, and it was in trying to help Miss Addie that she found a new family.
