Eliza Acton's immensely important and popular recipe book, a bestseller generally considered to be one of the best cookery works written in English, running through thirteen editions in nine years.Acton is understandably best known for this work, which was one of the first cookery books aimed at a domestic reader.In later years this work was eclipsed by Mrs Beeton, which included several recipes plagiarised from Acton's 'Modern Cookery'.Illustrated with a frontispiece, and seven plates.The fourteenth edition of this popular work.Collated, complete.Thirty-six pages of publisher's adverts to the rear. In the original publisher's cloth binding. Externally, generally smart. Small damp stains to the head of the front board, and to the rear board. Spine is a little faded. Small tear to the head of the rear joint. Minor bumping to the head and tail of the spine and to the extremities. A few further light marks and some discolouration to the boards and spine. Rear hinge is starting but firm. Bookseller's label to the paste downs. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are lightly age-toned and generally clean with some scattered spots. Good
