ESTC N6101, records six copies: BL, Cambridge (2), Reading University, HEH, and Washington State; there was a second printing in 1769, of which ESTC T173535 records ten copies. Spine and edges skillfully repaired; very good copy.. 8vo, contemporary sheep, dark red leather spine label, gilt rules and lettering. A substantial work over 125 short chapters on vegetable, herb, and fruit gardens, and gardens for pleasure. The authors describe themselves as gardeners at Wandsworth and Battersea, and little else is known about them. In his More Old English Farming Books, G. E. Fussell notes on page 143: "No rich, elaborate information exists about James Rutter and Daniel Carter, gardeners, who produced Modern Eden: or, the Gardener's Universal Guide 1767, a copy of which and of the second edition, London 1769, are in the Lindley Library, but I cannot trace them elsewhere."
