London: Printed by A. Strahan for T. Cadell Jun. and W. Davies [et al.], 1802. Hardcover. viii, inserted steel-engraved maps as called for, mouldmade paper throughout with wide margins, 11x8.7 inch hardcovered textblock in full calf boards with spine titling still bright. Front hinge is cracked through cleanly, rear hinge appears intact, casing is currently held together by a very old plastic sleeve we have not disturbed. We note a 2" triangular repair at gutter of pp.vii/viii with dustsoil on viii, endsheets a little foxed, text leaves much less so, occasional foxing to maps which lie flat and mostly unmolested, folded maps likewise sound. A very good copy, pace the detached cover, bearing a large armorial bookplate and a tiny modern address fiche. Maps collated and perfect as per "Maps in Vol. II," a map-list at p.viii. List starts with "23. The World on Mercator's Projection / before the title", a folded map in fine shape, bound in at the correct position as are all. "23, 24, 25, 26" were examined and found very good, "27. Central Asia / l53" is a folded map with minor mis-fold lines, "28. Japan / 153" is very good, "29. Hindoostan" has more than the ususal foxing, as do a few others, but some are near-clean of it. Maps 30-44 present and unmolested, as is a paginated but unnumbered terminal map displaying two maplike "Sketches of Central Africa." Find 23 maps in all including the unnumbered singleton. The repair at vii/viii is an old, painstaking, successful one; this is a well taken-care of volume.
