About This Item
A nice example of the fifth edition of Modern Polo, by (then) Lt-Col Edward Darley (E.D.) Miller, published by Hurst & Blackett in 1927.
Lt-Col Miller was originally with the 17th Lancers and at time of authorship was Polo Manager of the Hurlingham Club. The book is described - by those with more knowledge than I - as "a comprehensive examination of modern polo from the 1920s. One of the great polo books from the early 20th century."
480 pages, 172 b/w illustrations. Approx 8.75 x 6". Maroon cloth boards with embossed title to front board and spine.
This copy is signed by the author, dedicated to Arthur Baillie, with best wishes from the author, Roehampton Club 1927. A little unusually this inscription is on the front board endpaper.
The book appears to be in sound condition. There is some bumping and wear to board and spine edges/ends; the spine is slightly weak and the block thus a little loose. Spine titles - black on maroon - are a little indistinct; perhaps they were originally gilt. Titles to front board remain fairly bright. Around eight pages have uneven edges due to being "cut" by hand (i.e. not successfully machine-cut by the original printing process). Front free endpaper carries two prices in pencil - 7/6 and £50 (!!). An ex-libris sticker is also present. Please see photos and ask for further information if required.
