London : Fisher, Son and Co, 1828 4 volume set of this scarce work published between 1828 and 1832 - the author beginning the series with Africa. In contemporary half leather bindings with marbled boards. Classed as 'fair' because some sections are quite browned and some page edges are nibbled/turned over due to poor paper quality. Adams drew on a wide variety of sources for his narrative and the work is illustrated with maps, hand coloured plates of people in local costume, and black and white plates. The bindings have gilt lines and elaborate blind-stamped designs with title and volume in gilt to the spines. They are sound and clean. There is some scuffing to the marbling and some wear and bumping to corners, but overall bindings in very good condition. Original endpapers present with ink signature to fep. Vol I: Africa hand coloured vignette title page 1828; plain title page 1830; plain fold out map of Africa; 9 hand coloured and 3 black and white plates. 456 pp.The map has a small repair at a fold and there are some browned/grubby sections. Vol II: Asia - hand coloured frontispiece, coloured vignette title page dated 1828, a second title page dated 1830, plain fold out map of Asia; and 10 further colour plates. 460 pp.The map has had some repair and has browning. The plate opposite p 254 has a small repaired tear. Contents brighter, particularly the plates. Vol III: America - has a colour plate frontispiece, hand coloured vignette title page 1828; plain title page dated 1830, plain fold-out map, a further 9 colour plates and 1 black and white plate. 460 pp. A very good volume. P 74 has small loss to bottom corner margin. Vol IV: Europe - colour frontispiece; hand coloured vignette title page dated 1828; a second title page dated 1831; and a further 10 colour plates; 464 pp. The map has had considerable repair to fold tears, and the plate at p 89 has a small repaired edge tear. Reasonably clean.

LONDON : J Pemberton, D Browne, 1732 A VG copy of this rare and interesting work by John Macky (published anonymously). John Macky (d 1726) was a Scotsman and a government agent or spy. According to sources he informed the British of James II's intention to invade England in 1792, and his network of spies was vital to the discovery in February and March 1708 of Jacobite plans for the invasion of Scotland. This book, in the form of a series of letters, is written with considerable knowledge and authority. He travelled extensively in the region, dying finally in Rotterdam in 1726. This copy is newly rebound in half leather and marbled boards with raised bands to spine, gilt tooling and gilt title label. Internally, the contents comprise: half title; advertisement for 'A Journey through England', title page, Introduction with decorative headpiece, initial capitals, and decorative tailpiece (pp V-XXX), publisher's advert (2pp), errata (1 pge), letters with decorative head and tailpieces… Read More

Description:
London: Jonah Bowyer, 1717 A good copy of the first English edition (published one year after the French 1st publication) with 37 fine engraved plates, maps and charts as called for. Frezier was a French royal military engineer, and was asked to undertake a voyage to Spanish possessions in South America to study fortifications and to chart the western coast. The first section covers his voyage from France round Cape Horn and the second gives detail of his voyage along the coast of Chile and Peru. His observations were valuable and he gives interesting accounts of local people and customs. Of interest now (particularly for those with golfing and strawberry eating interests) are his depictions of a sport that looks like golf and his discovery of strawberries which he introduced to France. Frezier made some geographical errors which Halley (of comet fame) corrects in this edition.
In contemporary panelled calf which has been expertly rebacked to provide a newer spine with raised bands and title label.… Read More

Description:
London: Printed for Dan. Browne, and Lockyer Davis, 1753 A good copy of the 4th edition of Martin Martin's account of his visit to St Kilda in 1697 (first published in 1698). Martin Martin lived on Skye and was a gaelic speaker. He decided to visit and study the western isles of Scotland to record both the land and its culture and natural history. Although Martin's account was mocked by some, particularly because he was considered too believing of local tales, it was much read and reprinted. This copy is in a probably later 1800's half leather binding with marbled boards. The spine has blind stamped decoration and gilt compartments with leather title label to spine. It sound and clean with some rubbing at joints, edges and corners and a little scuffing. There is the armorial bookplate of Edward Herbert, Earl of Powis to the front pastedown, and some marking to the endpapers suggesting that a cover was stuck down over the book at some point. Description:
Indianapolis: Dog Ear Publishing, January 2013. Trade Paperback. Fine. Slight reading wear to corners, otherwise pristine. Not from a library. No remainder mark. Not clipped. Not damaged. Suitable for gifting. 163 pages. The 25 authors of this book were volunteers in the first Peace Corps rural community development project in Africa: Sierra Leone, 1965-67. They are also the first group to tell a collective story of Peace Corps volunteers, anywhere. The Peace Corps was in its infancy then, and memories of John Kennedy were strong among the young volunteers. Sierra Leone was also in its infancy in the first few years after independence, before military coups and tribal warfare became common. The authors forthrightly recount their feelings of loneliness and isolation, and their frightening experiences with secret societies and witchcraft, but their uniquely optimistic "can-do" American attitude brought most through a great life experience.
