About This Item

n.p.: Calmann-Levy, 1936. Hardcover. Near Fine. Dufour, D'Emilien. Quarto size, 289 pp., all text in French. Pierre Loti, the pseudonym of Julien Viaud (1850-1923) was educated to be a naval officer, gradually rising in his profession until attaining the rank of captain in 1906. His life at sea, among seafaring men, inspired this and many of his other stories. Contemporary critic Edmund Gosse said of Loti: "At his best [he] was unquestionably the finest descriptive writer of the day" (n.b., above information from Wiki).

Mon Frere Yves is perhaps Pierre Loti's best-known work, a semi-autobiographical novel describing the friendship between French naval officer Pierre Loti and a hard drinking Breton sailor, Yves Kermadec, during the 1870s and 80s - the descriptions of Breton seafaring life, on board ship and on shore, set the tone for his later masterpiece An Iceland Fisherman (1886).

Originally published in wraps, this volume has been bound as a hardcover book, with the front wrapper serving as a front pastedown.

___DESCRIPTION: Bound in full red cloth over boards, illustrated front pastedown in red and black, red and black lettering, gilt lettering on the spine, title page in red and black with a small vignette of a house in a field, many signatures unopened, several colour illustrations throughout with some retaining the original tissue guards; quarto size (9 1/4" by 7 1/8"), pagination: [i-vi] 1-282, [limitation page].
