Panormi [Palermo]: apud D. Cyllenium Hesperium, sumpt. Antonini Giardinae bibliopolae Panorm, 1685. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Fine. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Folio - over 12 - 15" tall. Monumenta omnia mathematica, quae extant, quorumque catalogum inuersa pagina demonstrat : ex traditione ... D. Francisci Maurolici ... opus præclarissimum, non priùs typis commissum [ed. J. S. Salva]. Folio (309x213 mm). [8], 296 pp., title page printed in red and black with large woodcut device, many woodcut diagrams in text, blanks present. Bound at the end are two excerpts (complete in itself) from Archimedes' Opera quae extant (edited by David Rivault, Paris: Claude Morel, 1615), in parallel Latin and Greek text with several woodcut ills. and diagrams: (1) Planorum Aequiponderantium, seu centra gravitatum planorum, pp. 145-218; (2) De insidentibus humido libri duo..., pp. 487-549 (1:blank). Near contemporary calf (rubbed and scuffed at extremities, but binding sound and strong), gilt spine with label, edges colored in red, silk marker present. Text somewhat browned throughout, some (mainly marginal) dampstaining, occational paper repairs to edges, p. 250 with small hole. Provenance: Willem Jacob 's Gravesande (1688-1742), Duch philosopher and mathematician (18C inscription to first page of first extract, reading "Gennete / Ex libris Domini s'Gravesande"). A nice copy of interesting provenance. ---- A paraphrase of Archimedes' works made between 1534 and 1550 by the Sicilian Francesco Maurlico (1494-1575) some of which was printed at Messina by Paolo Bonacota, 1670-72. This was never published but the sheets were acquired by Lorenzo di Tommaso and then confiscated by the Spanish authorities in 1678. Juan Siverstre Salva acquired 425 copies of the original edition (COPAC). The bound in extracts are form the second and influential 1615 Greek and Latin edition (DSB) of the works of Archimedes, valuable for its numerous woodcuts and diagrams (see Houzeau-L. 826; Riccardi I/1, 43; Cantor II, 659).

Description:
1534 1ed Apian Instrumentum Astronomy Mathematics Alchemy Durer ART Trigonometry
Peter Apian was a 16th-century humanist who is remembered for his studies in astronomy and mathematics. One of his best known works was his 1534 mathematics treatise 'Instrumentum Primi Mobilis'. This book was Apian's studies in trigonometry, and, according to Tomash & Williams,
"Apian published a table of sines that, for the first time, was based on a circle with a radius of a power of ten, in this case one hundred thousand. The values of the functions were thus decimal and were easily adapted to any situation in which the defining circle was a decimal power."
This 1534 first edition is exceedingly rare and valuable. It contains the expected sine charts as well as numerous woodcut illustrations depicting protractor and arc readings. Note that this incredible work includes the original title page, which features a woodcut after Albrecht Durer.

Description:
1716 Geometry Le Clerc Mathematics & Architecture CLASSIC Illustrated Landscapes

"one of the earliest geometry treatises to combine mathematics and illustrated landscapes!"
A rare treatise on geometry that had a lasting influence on mathematicians and architects. Sebastien le Clerc wrote this book with the intents of it being used by workers, not necessarily students. The figures of geometry include scenery, rural views, castles, buildings, geometric instruments, and problems. This treatise is one of the earliest essays that combines geometry, architectural, and landscaping.
According to Hoffer, this work is
"one of the most attractive mathematical works ever published".

1659 1ed George Fox FAMOUS Primer for Scholars Mathematics Quaker Philosophy

George Fox, the founder of the Quakers, was known for his missionary travels and journal writings describing his life and ministry. However, he wrote an interesting primer which, on the surface, was intended for 'scholars and doctors'. Though, this work "Primer for the Schollers and Doctors of Europe", has often been considered one of the best children's books in England, according to Harvey Darton. This book offers elementary descriptions of subjects such as grammar, music, arithmetic, ethics, theology, and medicine.

Description:
London : Baldwin and Cradock, 1831 A collection of papers from the Library of Useful Knowledge bound in one volume. DeMorgan is best known for DeMorgan's Theorem (!A AND !B) == !(A OR B), which forms the basis of the modern technique used to miniaturise complex digital circuits, and thus delivers the extremely high density computing power of the today's microprocessor.

His work on probabilities is a land mark piece of mathematical theory that formed the basis of the actuarial calculations of life insurance policy risks. This is the rare first edition of this work, which appeared in the Library of Useful Knowledge. These were a series of learned papers prepared by the leading scientists and academics of the day, each being either 64 or 32 pages long – and sold at low cost to provide a source for knowledge “for the working man”. They were published by Society for the Diffusion of Useful Knowledge (SDUK).

The series was purchased by Longman Green, and re-issued under… Read More

London : Awnsham Churchill, 1682 A good copy of the 1st edition in later full leather binding with frontispiece and 23 full page plates, of which 10 are folding. Leybourn's first work on Dialing was published in 1669; it's popularity (particularly given the use of sun-dials and astrolabes by the navy at that time) led to this expanded folio version, funded by subscription. William Leybourn was a leading practical mathematician and authored a number of works on surveying, Gunter's Line and measuring tables. This copy has been rebound fairly recently in a full pigskin binding with raised bands and title and author labels. New endpapers have been added, and the frontispiece relaid and repaired (there was loss to the side edge and a little damage to the portrait). Contents with title page; To the Reader 3pp; Contents of the Tractates [the work is arranged in 11 sections or Tractates] 4pp; errata 1p; Introduction 12pp; text with plates, tables and diagrams 330 pp; finis; final blank. Previous owner's signature on the title page, else unmarked. Great '70s graphic design and illustrations. Developed while Goldberg was a grad student at SJS to make sturdy geometrical models that "combine techniques from the mathematics and art classroom." Patterns are included to make a equilateral tetrahedron, equilateral hexahedron, isosceles hexahedron, cube, octahedron, decahedron, icosahedron, twenty-four triangular hedron, and concave hedron. Goldberg published a more popular variation of the book in 1977, without Sellars (misspelled "Sellers" on the title page). The newer "Pholdit" featured simpler shapes and was marketed toward a more general audience for "family fun." Scarce.
