About This Item
London: Marlborough Fine Art, Ltd.. Near Fine in Near Fine dust jacket. 1970. y First Edition. Paperback. 94 pages; London: Near Fine in Near Fine dust jacket. 1970. First Edition. 94 pages; Clean and secure in original stiff pictorial wrappers in protective mylar dustjacket. Illustrated with 30 wonderful tipped-in colour plates and dozens b&w reproductions. OCLC 105713 The 18th-century German writer Georg Christoph Lichtenberg delighted in the blankness of a sheet of white paper. 'Paper', he said, 'that hasn't yet lost its virginity and still shines in the colour of innocenceis always better than after it has been used. ' He had an admirable understanding of the engravings of Hogarth. Odilon Redon said 'Imagine varied arabesques or mazes unfolding, not on a plane, but in space, with all that the profound and indeterminate margin of the sky would furnish to the mind; imagine the play of their lines projected and combined with the most diverse elements .. Then you have the ordinary source and structure of many of my drawings. ' Picasso, Moore and Sutherland, the three masters of drawing whose recent works form the present exhibition, make this same compulsive negation of the void every time they put pen, pencil or brush to paper, and the improbable initial scrawl contains, like a seed, the detailed life of the drawing. .; Art and Art History, Illustrated Books, Most Recent Listing .
