About This Item

Bruxelles, Editions Alde, 1916. Small 4to. Frontipiece. (1 blank leaf). 1 original drawing in ink. 108 pages. (2 blank leaves). Quarter morocco, gilt spine with raised bands, double gilt fillet on joints, top edge gilt (contemporary binding). First Edition. First performed at the Théâtre Le Bois Sacré in Brussels on September, 19th, 1916, "Morphinomanes" is a realistic drama that depicts a Parisian writer struggling with artificial paradises. In the aftermath of World War I, the play met with great success in Paris where it was performed at the Fontaine theater (now La Nouvelle Eve cabaret). The text of the play is preceded here by a dissertation entitled "Morphinism", by a certain "Doctor B***", a friend of the author who offers a short historical study of the dangers of drug abuse. Precious present copy, one of the 50 numbered copies of the deluxe issue, inscribed by the author. Also features an inked miniature signed "Jotes" (a. k. a. Jerzy Szwajcer, a Polish cartoonist based in Brussels), with René Maillard's signature on the back. Autograph dedication to "Madame Phili Bronsel" on the title page. Some very light foxing. Very good copy.
