About This Item

New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1910. First edition. Octavo (9" x 6.5"), viii & 247 pages plus 2 plates (portraits of Jesup). Signed binding by "Stikeman for Charles Scribner's Sons," three-quarter once green crushed morocco & green cloth, the spine in six compartments separated by raised bands, lettered or decorated in gilt in each compartment. Top edge gilt. Calling card of Mrs. Morris K. Jesup laid in.

Morocco mellowed to a rich brown, lightly rubbed & soiled, brief wear at corners, small stain at the bottom edge of the text at the gutter pervasive throughout (not affecting text), otherwise a very good copy.

Banker, philanthropist & president of the American Museum of Natural History, Jesup was a patron of scientific research & contributed substantial funds to the Arctic expeditions of Robert Peary. A chapter on the discovery of the North Pole is included.
