Cambridge: The Riverside Press, 1887. 1887, 15th edition. Hardcover, brown binding, gilt lettering on spine, 559 pages. Top edge in gilt. Frontispiece with tissue overlay. This book was published as the Riverside Edition, Vol. II, with introductory notes by George Parsons Lathrop. It was part of twelve volumes. This volume, "Mosses from an Old Manse," is a very popular work by Nathaniel Hawthorne. IT IS NOT A FACSIMILE OR RECENT REPRINT, IT IS THE 1887 EDITION. Condition: Some rubbing/abrasion to spine piece, light bump to area below it; minor shelf wear; four pages have short tears; else overall Very Good Plus. Hinges are tight. Frontispiece and tissue in fine condition. Pages crisp and clean, very readable. Free of smelly humidity stains and the smell of a cigarette or cigar smoker. The short stories were written while Hawthorne lived at the Old Manse in Concord, Mass., the home of Ralph Waldo Emerson's ancestors. He moved there after his marriage in 1842. The stories feature some of the author's finest short works, including the Old Manse, Mrs. Bullfrog, The Hall of Fantasy, the New Adam and Eve, Earth's Holocaust, The Artist of the Beautiful, and more.
