Julia Davis (1900 - 1993) was born & spent most of her life in West Virginia She was the first author from the state to win a Newbery Honor Award Specializing in historical & biographical fiction, much of her writing relates to the history of West Virginia and, in some cases, her family's role in that history She also wrote a biography of Stonewall Jackson & The Shenandoah, a title in the Rivers of America series
