Mountain man protagonist Sam Minard takes an Indian wife; she, and their unborn child, are killed by Crow Indians. After the murder, Sam Minard is consumed with vengeance, vows to "eat the liver" of Crows. Tale complicated by Johnson's connections with Kate Bowden, a widow in the face of madness. Film version: Jeremiah Johnson, starring Robert Redford.
