An active abolitionist, he was an influential force during the unsettled years of the Civil War and Reconstruction who did much to shape the court's interpretation of the Thirteenth, Fourteenth and Fifteenth Amendments. He wrote the majority opinion in the influential Slaughter-House Cases. Miller was considered a prospective presidential candidate by Republican leaders in the 1880s.
