Ruth Randall's signature is on the first free endpaper . Ruth Randall's husband , James G. Randall , directed the dissertation of David Herbert Donald at the University Of Illinois . Ruth Randall and Aida Donall became lifetime , close friends . Randall has made some marks in pencil in the margins of the text . The book is illustrated with exquisite drawings by Lawson
