About This Item

New York:: George H. Doran,, nd [1920]. Hardcover first edition -. Fair condition only in the original brown cloth with black lettering (fraying to ends and sides of spine, lettering rubbed on spine, toning to the pages, bookplate). First US printing. The first sentence sums up this early novel by Maugham: "this book might also be called the triumph of love." And at the end, the comment is made that Bertha "read as fancy prompted her, without a plan, because she wanted to and not because she ought. . . The writers who appealed to their age and not to posterity have by contrast a subtle charm" which certainly sums up Maugham's lesser known works. Both the English and US first editions had some "offensive parts" removed from the original manuscript. GDH logo on title page. 313 pp.
