About This Item

Princeton, New Jersey: Princeton University Press, 1985. Softcover. VG, clean and tight but for pencil notations by former owner (professor of classical art) on ffep. Hot pink wraps with bw line drawing and white lettering. 296 pp. with 26 bw plates, 110 bw text figures, and 4 diagrams. Written in 1959 for the 1960 Bollingen Series. Appearing for the first time in paperback and illustrated with line drawings, diagrams, and 26 half-tone plates, this study of the iconographic aspect of Japanese Buddhist sculpture surveys the significance of eight principal and six secondary hand gestures (mudra), in addition to the postures (asana), such as the "lotus," and the symbolic attributes. A pictorial index helps the reader in identifying the gestures.
